THERE IS NO GAS STATION UP ON THE MOUNTAIN. Be sure and remember to fill up with gas in Banner Elk before going up on the mountain. As it gets closer to winter, the more important this is.

Also, before going up on the mountain, you probably will want to stop for groceries and supplies in Tynecastle (next to the McDonalds on 105 - you turn at the light there to North Hwy. 184) at Lowe’s Food Store or at the Food Lion in front of Sugar Mountain in Banner Elk (on Hwy. 184).

On the mountain, you can get quick things at Fred’s General Store (more expensive but very convenient). Even if you don’t need anything, be sure and stop to check out Fred’s - it is really charming.

For travel information / Directions...(see Rental Info & Guidelines)

On the Mountain you can get local information on Channel 2. The High Country station is Channel 6 and the local radio station is 102.3 FM (plays oldies).

Some attractions that are open (weather permitting - some on the weekends only) are Grandfather Mountain (it has a swinging mile high bridge), Linville Caverns, The Blowing Rock, and traveling (and hiking) the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is subject to the weather, and some are open only on the weekends so you should call ahead. Grandfather Mountain and Beech Mountain also offer breathtaking views. The area offers great shopping. A must see is the Boone and Valle Crucis Mast General Stores. I always enjoy shopping at the Outlet Mall (35 stores) in Blowing Rock. Don’t forget Fred’s General Store on Beech Mountain. Horse back riding is available year round (depending on the weather) and is popular.

Besides the obvious winter sports, for exercise on the mountain there is walking and hiking. For those who want to get out and walk there is a level fitness trail around Lake Coffey (the scenery is beautiful) or if you prefer to stay inside where it is warm, enjoy the fire place. Between Tynecastle and Boone is Seven Devils. On Hawksnest they have opened new tubing runs. There are several different levels for all types of "tubers", beginners to expert.

Gander’s (on Beech Mtn. Parkway next to Frazier’s) is very casual and has a limited menu but the food is good - you should call first though to make sure he is open. (These restaurants are located approx.1/2 mile from our chalet) Beech Alpen Restaurant (at bottom of mountain, on right when going up) is very popular for lunch. Across the street is a new Mexican restaurant (we haven’t had a chance to try it out).. For fine dining, Jackalope’s is lovely. It has a great view and nice casual dress is acceptable. For sandwiches on the mountain, you can try Fred’s Deli (downstairs). We have since tried the new Mexican restaurant and found the food to be authentic Mexican fare. It was delicious!

Across from Sugar Mountain on Hwy 184 is Mike’s Inland Seafood Restaurant. It is great and reasonably priced. The hush puppies there get a 10, and for a place "inland", has some of the best seafood we have had. Everything we eat there is great, and the servings are large. In Boone, the Sagebrush Grill (on right coming from Banner Elk) always serves a terrific meal. Daniel Boone’s Inn (Southern family style eating) is very popular but for southern eating, if it is open we recommend Shirley’s located in Tennessee (usually closes from Nov. or Dec. to the middle of Feb- I would call ahead to see if they are open (number listed on phone list on refrigerator). Back in Boone, NC, Mel’s Diner has great burgers, shakes, sundaes etc. This is a "must visit" place for our kids...very 50's.(on the left right before you get to Sagebrush Inn.) In Banner Elk another favorite of ours is a “Coffee & Pastry/Sandwich/Pizza Café” on the side road next to Banner Elk Café on Hwy 184. In fact the owner is the wife of the owner of Banner Elk Café. It is absolutely charming and the food is wonderful. It had sofas and a fireplace (in addition to tables) that reminded me of the coffee house on “Friends”. They have regulars that come in and sit before the fireplace and have their morning coffee and read the paper. In Banner Elk in the Food Lion Shopping Center on 184 (near Sugar Mtn.) there is a Chinese restaurant next to Subway.
